The Right Base Makes the Runeword
A runeword is only as good as the item you build it in. The same rune recipe can feel completely different depending on the base item’s sockets, requirements, attack speed, defense, durability, class restrictions, and whether it is normal, superior, or ethereal.
That is why players care so much about bases.
A Phase Blade can be perfect for Grief. A Monarch is the classic Spirit shield base. Archon Plate, Mage Plate, and Dusk Shroud are popular armor bases for runewords like Enigma or Fortitude. Ethereal polearms and spears are often used for mercenary weapons such as Infinity, Insight, Obedience, and Pride.
Some bases are chosen for low strength requirements. Others are picked for max damage, defense, resale value, or a specific class setup. Paladin shields, claws, bows, axes, swords, and elite armor bases all have different use cases.
Use this category when you already know the runeword you want, but still need the correct socketed item to build it properly.
