Sanctuary Relic D2R Chronicle Guide
Complete the Unique-item list for Backlight, the Set-item list for Footsteps, or the Runeword list for the golden Town Portal.
The Three Chronicle Rewards
Each category has its own completion requirement, so you can work toward the portal without finishing the other two.
The system belongs to Reign of the Warlock. Its purpose is to record your discoveries and creations, including information about their first discovery.
It gives the long-running Holy Grail item hunt a place inside the game, although online party credit means it should not automatically be treated as proof of a strictly solo-found collection.
Unique Items Identify all eligible Unique items Backlight
Set Items Identify all eligible Set items Footsteps
Runewords Create all required Runewords Golden Town Portal

What Does the Chronicle Track?
The Chronicle has lists for Unique items, Set items and Runewords. Discovered entries can show who found an item first, when it was found and what dropped it.
Search and filters help you switch between recorded discoveries and entries you still need.
These are cosmetic rewards. Completing a category does not add a combat skill or improve an item's rolls.
Unique Items: Identifying Your Way to Backlight
- Eligible Unique drop: identification is the action attached to the Unique-item reward. Watch for the Eligible for Chronicle notice and check the entry after identifying it. Identify
- Missing Chronicle entry: a familiar or low-value Unique can still be useful if it fills a gap in your collection. Check Credit
- Old identified stash item: already identified equipment transferred from before Reign of the Warlock does not simply fill every missing entry. Do Not Assume
- Already identified trade: owning the item should not be confused with earning Chronicle identification credit. Verify
Completion unlocks Backlight, a visible effect behind your character.
It does not require the Set or Runeword lists to be complete.

Set Items: Every Eligible Piece Counts
- Eligible Set piece: the goal is the full eligible Set-item list, not equipping one complete Set on a character. Identify
- Green drop you would normally leave: it may still fill a missing Chronicle entry. Check Entry
- Duplicate Set piece: another copy of a recorded piece does not move you closer to a missing one. Duplicate
Once the remaining list is short, write down the exact pieces before choosing your next farming target.
Completing this category unlocks Footsteps, the golden trail beneath your character while moving.

Runewords: Creating the Golden Town Portal
The Runeword category asks you to create the recipes.
Holding their runes, collecting the bases or receiving finished Runewords does not replace the crafting step. Player testing on Blizzard's forum also distinguishes creating a Runeword from simply possessing its ingredients.
- Compatible socketed base: the item type and quality must be valid for the recipe. Check Base
- Required runes: you need the full recipe in the correct order. Check Order
- Finished Runeword: confirm the Chronicle entry after crafting. The finished item and credited recipe are separate things to verify. Verify Credit
Before Inserting Any Rune
- Item type: the base belongs to a category allowed by that recipe.
- Item quality: the base is eligible for Runewords rather than Magic, Rare, Set or Unique.
- Socket count: the base has exactly the number the recipe requires.
- Rune order: insert the runes in the listed sequence.
- Game rules: the recipe can be created in the selected era and Ladder status.

When the required list is complete, the reward changes your Town Portal to the golden effect.
It keeps the ordinary portal's role as a route back to town; the reward changes its appearance.

Check the Mode Before Committing Materials
- Softcore vs Hardcore: Chronicle records are separate. Separate
- Online vs Offline: these collections are separate too. Separate
- Online Ladder + Non-Ladder: they contribute within the same Softcore or Hardcore collection. Shared Collection
These boundaries are described in player reports about separate collections .
Do not assume that everything on an old "Ladder-only" list is still restricted in the same way.
Blizzard's Patch 3.3 notes changed the availability of earlier Ladder-only items.
Mosaic also has its own history: Patch 3.1.1 explicitly fixed its crafting on online Non-Ladder.
Party Credit and a Personal Holy Grail
Players have documented party identification credit : another party member identifying an eligible drop can add it to your Chronicle.
That can help a group collection, but it changes what the recorded list proves about your own finds.
- Strict personal Holy Grail: keep your own record of challenge rules and discoveries. Track Separately
- Chronicle cosmetic rewards: follow the game's own eligibility and completion rules. Use Chronicle
- Runeword portal credit: do not assume another account can craft every Runeword and simply hand the completed items to you. Verify Creation
What Is Excluded From Completion?
The Chronicle is not a checklist of every row in an item database. Game data marks some items as excluded.
In the reference build used for this guide, exclusions include certain Sunder Charm entries and the five pieces of Warlord's Glory.
How to Check and Enable a Chronicle Reward
- Open Chronicle from the in-game menu.
- Choose View Rewards.
- Check the completion status of the relevant category.
- Enable the reward using its available toggle.
After enabling the Town Portal reward, cast a fresh portal to inspect the effect.
For Footsteps, move your character so the trail becomes visible.
A recorded completion and an enabled cosmetic are two separate checks.
A Practical Plan for Your Next Session
- Backlight: identify eligible Unique items and confirm Chronicle credit before sorting the drop. Identify
- Footsteps: do the same with eligible Set pieces. Identify
- Golden Town Portal: make a recipe-by-recipe materials list, verify the base and rune order, craft the Runeword, then confirm its Chronicle entry. Craft + Verify
If you are considering a Town Portal unlock service, check whether it supplies both runes and bases, crafts on your account, includes the required mode and leaves the finished items with you.
A portal-only service should define those deliverables clearly; it does not also complete Backlight and Footsteps.
