Your Mercenary Is Part of the Build
A strong D2R mercenary is not just extra damage following you around. The right merc setup can give your character aura support, mana sustain, crowd control, elemental damage scaling, curse utility, boss help, or simply enough breathing room to survive Hell difficulty.
Act 2 mercenaries are still the classic choice for many builds because they can combine powerful auras with weapons like Infinity, Insight, Obedience, Pride, or Reaper’s Toll. Add armor such as Fortitude or Treachery and a helm like Andariel’s Visage, Vampire Gaze, or Tal Rasha’s Horadric Crest, and the mercenary becomes a real part of the character’s power.
Act 1 setups matter too. Faith bow mercenaries can support Amazon, melee, and attack-speed-focused builds, while other ranged setups can fit specific farming routes or niche characters.
Act 3 mercenaries are more specialized, often chosen for elemental support, caster-style utility, or specific gear interactions. They are not the default pick for every build, but they can make sense when your setup benefits from ranged spell support or extra elemental pressure.
Act 5 mercenaries are a strong option for players who want aggressive frontline support. Frenzy or Barbarian-style merc setups can use powerful swords, apply utility through runewords, help with crowd control, and stay active in harder farming zones when geared properly.
Use this category when your main character is close, but the support side still feels weak. A better mercenary setup can improve clear speed, stabilize farming, help with immunities, and make your build feel smoother in Chaos Sanctuary, Baal runs, Terror Zones, Ubers preparation, or general Hell farming.
